A country that used to include all settled areas of the continent, it is now a pale shadow of its former glory. Officially ruled by the Great Khan it's usually a loose coalition of the many Khans who roam their own territories, frequently in conflict with each other. Under stronger Great Khans constant testing of their northern border with Rhen is typical, but in recent years conflicts with their much more organized and magically protected neighbor are more likely to be over trade agreements, and also more likely to be lesser khans fighting among themselves over better access to the spelled steel of the north. Outside of items (and more specifically weapons and armor) magic is generally looked down upon in most khanates, accepted as a necessary evil in some cases (every large settlement and Khan of any size has their clerics, oracles, or shaman for instance) practitioners of magic have very little respect in this honor bound society. The most recent insult to this once great territory is the final peace treaty with the newly created Kingdom of the Southern Isles that they used to own, stripping them of their last deepwater ports. (a fact that weighed heavily in how the rebellion played out)
